WRITING COURSES
The six levels of writing courses at APLUS Learning Center seek to provide students with opportunities to focus on the skills and the practice of writing.
Pre-Writing through Writing 2 help students establish a strong foundation, focusing on both reading and writing skillsets.
The Intensive Essay Writing (IEW) courses are designed to help students succeed with college-level writing.
APLUS Writing Enrichment courses help students learn to read more challenging literature with greater skill, to write more complex and mature compositions, to develop independent analytical skills, and to develop disciplined study habits for continued academic success. Compared with regular academic school English courses, our Writing Enrichment courses are more demanding, challenging, and focused. A student who takes the full range of our writing courses will find that the skills taught and practiced in each course build on those of the previous one and prepare for the practice of the next.
Intensive Essay Writing - Level 1 (IEW1)
Grades 6-8
Students will practice several of the most common types of essays (including descriptive, persuasive, and narrative), engage in frequent class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and take part in one-on-one student/teacher conferences to reinforce and improve their writing.
pre requisite: Writing 1 and/or Writing 2, or Placement Test
See more details about Writing 1 and Writing 2 here.
Intensive Essay Writing - Level 2 (IEW2)
Grades 7-9
This course challenges students to practice writing different types of academic essays, and focuses on structure, content, style, and mechanics. Students will engage in class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and participate in regular one-on-one student/teacher conferences. Students will also gain familiarity with common essays required on many standardized tests including SAT, SSAT, and other admission tests. Each IEW course builds from the previous course, and content will develop with each level.
pre requisite: IEW 1
Intensive Essay Writing - Level 3 (IEW3)
Grades 8-10
Students will continue to practice writing and finalize different types of essays, including literary, persuasive, research, and synthesis. This course also provides a specialized focus on developing style and voice in their writing. They will engage in class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and participate in regular one-on-one student/teacher conferences. Each IEW course builds from the previous course, and content and complexity of argument will develop accordingly.
pre requisite: IEW 2
MATH COURSES
A strong foundation in Mathematics is crucial in paving the way to academic success. APLUS Math Enrichment courses are designed so that students can build a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and mastery of the skills in each topic. All students will receive an interim report midway through the course and a final report card on the last day of class.
Pre-Algebra 1
Gr 6-7
Students will gain an introduction to algebraic expressions, writing algebraic expressions from verbal phrases/problems, simplifying algebraic expression and solving one-step equations/inequalities, properties of exponents, scientific notation and operations, and linear relationships.

Gr 7-8
This is a continuation of Pre-Algebra 1, building on top of what students learned in Pre-Algebra 1. Students will understand proportional relationships, rational number operations, geometric relationships (i.e. measurements, angles), statistics and probability, functional relationships, and linear equations.
Algebra 1
Gr 8-9
In Algebra 1, students will be exposed to topics including an introduction to quadratic functions and an introduction to one-variable statistics. Word problems and problem-solving skills will be emphasized.
Geometry
Gr 9-10
