WRITING COURSES

  • Grades 3-5 | $800

In this entry level workshop, students will practice the writing process required in paragraph writing: topic sentences, organization, claims, and evidence.

    Pre-Requisite: N/A

  • Grades 4-6 | $800

Students will perform close reading of a novel and analyze textual details to make an argument in a multi-paragraph essay.

    Prerequisite: Pre-Writing Preferred

  • Grades 5-7 | $800

Students will read several genres, including prose and poetry at the early high school level. Students will make complex arguments and demonstrate control over the standard conventions of English. Students taking this course should demonstrate the ability to read at an advanced level.

    Prerequisite: Writing 1

  • Grades 6-8 | $860

Students will practice several of the most common types of essays, engage in frequent class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and take part in one-on-one student/teacher conferences to reinforce and improve their writing.

    Prerequisite: Writing 1 and/or Writing 2

  • Grades 7-9 | $860

This course challenges students to practice writing different types of academic essays and focuses on structure, content, style, and mechanics. Students will engage in class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and participate in regular one-on-one student/teacher conferences. Each IEW course builds from the previous course, and content will develop with each level.

    Prerequisite: IEW 1

  • Grades 8-10 | $960

Students will continue to practice writing different types of academic essays, with a specialized focus on developing style and voice in their writing. They will engage in class discussion, read sample exemplar essays, and participate in regular one-on-one student/teacher conferences. Each IEW course builds from the previous course, and content and complexity of argument will develop accordingly.

    Prerequisite IEW2

  • Grades 9-10 | $960

In this final course in the IEW series, students will read a variety of non-fiction essays from published authors, deconstruct text, and develop their own essay topics over the course of the semester. Students will focus on analyzing text for rhetorical appeals and devices in order to write stylistically and argumentatively complex essays, as well as meet with the instructor regularly to review, revise, and improve their writing.

    Prerequisite: IEW3

The six levels of courses at APLUS Learning Center seek to provide students with opportunities to focus on the skills and the practice of writing.

  • Pre-Writing through Writing 2 helps students establish strong foundations, focusing on both reading and writing skillsets.

  • The Intensive Essay Writing (IEW) courses are designed to help students succeed with college-level writing.

APLUS Writing Enrichment courses help students learn to read more challenging literature with greater skill, to write more complex and mature compositions, to develop independent analytical skills, and to develop disciplined study habits for continued academic success. Compared with regular academic school English courses, our Writing Enrichment courses are more demanding and focused. A student who takes the full range of our writing courses will find that the skills taught and practices in each course build on those of the previous one and prepare for the practice of the next.

MATH COURSES

  • Grades 3-4 | $800

Students will master basic math skills that work toward building a strong foundation for understanding more challenging concepts later on. The curriculum will be modeled after a MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools) Compacted Math 4 course, which will include the following modules: Rounding and Algorithms for Addition and Subtraction, Unit Conversions and Problem Solving with Metric Measurement, Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division, Angles and Figures, Fractions, Order of Operations, Decimals, and Measurements with Multiplication.

  • Grades 4-5 | $800

Students will continue their math journey by demonstrating a solid understanding of Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimals, Volume and Area, Word Problems, and Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane.

  • Grades 4-6 | $800

Students will get an introduction to algebraic expressions, writing algebraic expressions from verbal phrases/problems, simplifying algebraic expressions, and solving one-step equations/inequalities, properties of exponents, scientific notation and operations, and linear relationships.

  • Grades 5-7 | $800

This is a continuation of Pre-Algebra 1, building on top of what students learned in Pre-Algebra 1. Students will understand proportional relationships, rational number operations, geometric relationships (i.e. measurements, angles), statistics and probability, functional relationships, and linear equations.

  • Grades 6-8 | $800

In Algebra 1, students will be exposed to topics including introduction to quadratic functions and introduction to one-variable statistics. Word problems and problem-solving skills will be emphasized.

  • Grades 7-9 | $860

In this course, students will cover topics including objective Areas of Shapes, Pythagorean Theorem, Area of Composite Figures, Area of Hexagons, Rotations of Two-Dimensional Figures, Parallel and Perpendicular Lines, Equations of Lines, Coordinate Geometry, Quadrilaterals and Triangles in the Coordinate Grid, Area and Perimeter in the Coordinate Grid.

  • Grades 8-10 | $860

Students will build on their knowledge of Algebra 1 of Linear, Quadratic, and Exponential Functions to include Polynomial, Rational, Radical, Exponential, and Logarithmic Functions. Students will also study probability and statistics.

  • Grades 10-12 | $960

Pre-Calculus will help students gain an understanding of critical topics of various functions through modeling and problem solving. Functions include logarithmic, exponential, polynomial, rational, radical, piece-wise, trigonometric, and circular.

A strong foundation in Mathematics is crucial in paving the way to academic success. APLUS Math Enrichment courses are designed so that students can build a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and mastery of the skills in each topic. All students will receive an interim report midway through the course and a final report card the last day of class.

BOOK STUDY

  • Grades 4-6 | $400

Students will be responsible for purchasing the reading materials/books on their own. Specific titles and editions will be announced at a later time.

  • Grades 6-8 | $460

Students will be responsible for purchasing the reading materials/books on their own. Specific titles and editions will be announced at a later time.

  • Grades 8-9 | $520

Students will be responsible for purchasing the reading materials/books on their own. Specific titles and editions will be announced at a later time.

Our book study courses aim to reignite the love of reading in students. In this day and age when technology and other distractions have dampened students’ love of reading, it is no surprise that mastery of important skills such as reading comprehension and an understanding of advanced vocabulary and literary elements have also declined. Students will be expected to do a “deep dive” into the assigned texts and readings and be prepared for discussion as well as complete other activities.
