GT - Math & Humanities

Rationale, Purpose & Audience

  • To provide a private sector, supplemental alternative to district programming for HighlyGifted rising 4th and 6th grade students* which may no longer be as accessible due to recent changes in MCPS screening and selection policies for magnet programs
  • To provide an additional subset of our highly gifted population – students who are twice exceptional or demonstrably highly gifted with learning disabilities – with access to supplemental, alternative programming commensurate with their intellectual abilities
  • To provide parents of highly gifted youth with an educational service that is more cost effective than a private school education while conferring some of the same academic benefits

*Grades 5 and 7 will be added in 2019-2020, with Grade 8 added in the Fall of 2020 

The Highly Gifted Child

  • Frequently reports experiencing boredom in classrooms in which curricula and instructional methods and pacing are geared for an on-grade level population Is often, though not always, a polymath – i.e., equally interested and talented in mathematics and humanities, both “left brain” and “right brain”
  • Shares social and emotional characteristics as well as intellectual characteristics with their highly gifted counterparts – e.g., heightened sensitivity to ethical and moral issues relative to most children his/her age; enjoyment of discussion and debate on a level and with an intensity unusual for his/her age; attraction to pursuits that many in his/herage group would not find as compelling (extensive reading, writing “for fun,” chess, robotics, performing arts, etc.)
  • Frequently reports experiencing  a sense of isolation from peers in a typical academic or social setting and requires a community of highly gifted peers in which s/he can fit in, feel accepted and enjoy similar intellectual interests and other commonalities
  • In order to thrive academically, socially and emotionally, highly gifted children need each other almost as much as they need teachers who understand how to teach them

 Mathematics Program

  • Problem-centered approach  using a variety of materials to enrich student understanding and enjoyment of mathematics (e.g., state and national assessments; math competition materials and games; math textbooks for international students from Australia and China, frequently used by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme)
  • Grade 6 APLUS GT math curriculum will go beyond Common Core standards to prepare students for deep understanding and mastery in practices in pre-Algebra (equivalent to IM7 in MCPS); Students will also be encouraged to take part in AMC Math Competition

 Humanities Program

  • William & Mary Language Arts Curriculum – Winner of the 2016 & 2017 Legacy Book Awards and Awards from the National Association for Gifted Children’s Curriculum Studies
  • Vocabulary from Classical Roots – a program for vocabulary acquisition focused on Greek and Latin roots that is useful in unlocking thousands of unfamiliar words in English, as well as reinforcing study of French and/or Spanish
  • Interdisciplinary strands drawn from the fields of art, philosophy, film/media studies, oratory performance and primary source interpretation and analysis

 Class Format & Homework Policies

  • Classes will be held from 9:00-12:00 Saturdays for sixteen (16) weeks per semester
  • Each class will be comprised of 1.5 hours of Math and 1.5 hours of Humanities
  • Homework will be assigned weekly, but judiciously. Every effort will be made to assign work that is meaningful and supporting to the GT program
